The design of the car can provide armored protection for an infantry squad on the battlefield, and provide fire support for infantry to get off, and at the same time has the ability to fight enemy tanks and armored vehicles.

ZBD-04 is mainly equipped with amphibious combat units in some military areas of the south.

At the same time, the armoured repair vehicle with the same chassis was developed.



Photos show that the new infantry combat vehicle uses a Russian BTR90 wheeled step car turret, which is exhibited in Russia in 2001, the latest version of the BMP3 turret.

However, the chassis of the car is obviously different from that of the BMP3 chassis. Considering that there is no such kind of crawler chassis at home and abroad, it can be judged that the chassis is a new generation of tracked armored chassis developed by our country. Therefore, the new two generation crawler infantry fighting vehicle is not the homemade model of Russian BMP3 infantry fighting vehicle, but the product of introduction and self research.


First speaking of chassis, from the perspective of photos, the chassis of the chassis is of a large size and streamline. For the fully welded body, the power cabin is used as the front part, the central part is the turret, the rear is the carrier cabin, and the rear door is opened to the left after the cabin is loaded.

A narrow rubber track and six pairs of small diameter double wheel bearing wheels and three pairs of supporting wheels are adopted, and two waterjet propullers are arranged on both sides of the rear door.

It is reported that the vehicle adopts hydro pneumatic suspension, which can adjust the height of the vehicle body, which is favorable for air pportation.

The shape of the car is relatively large, so it has better buoyancy reserve, and the riding comfort of the vehicle is greatly improved compared with the 86 type infantry fighting vehicle, which increases the space inside the vehicle and enables the infantry to carry more equipment, supplies or other technical equipment, and the continuous combat capability is raised.

There is a large wave board installed below the front of the car. Its size and position are similar to that of our Marine Corps 86B type infantry fighting vehicle. There is a more obvious weld between the wedge head and the car body after the wave board. Therefore, the car is judged to be a large floating box, providing buoyancy for the whole vehicle and becoming a whole with the car body.


The driver is located on the left side of the front part of the car body. It has a left hatch cover with 3 observation periscope.

A device similar to the engine exhaust pipe is raised on the side of the car near the driver. If it is an exhaust pipe, the design is based on the consideration of preventing water irrigation.

Above the caterpillar is similar to the 86 type of infantry combat vehicle similar to the arc baffle, but there is no 86 step of the complex entry and drainage structure, so although the vehicle has the ability of tracked water, but does not emphasize the high efficiency, only as a waterjet propulsion stand-by water propulsion or cooperate with the water jet propulsion device.

It is worth noting that there are two observation glasses on the left side of the car body, but only one on the right side. Only two holes are arranged under the observation mirror near the rear side of the car body, plus an observation mirror and a shooting hole on the back door of the car body. The infantry fighting vehicle has only 3 firing holes, so it can be judged that the vehicle does not emphasize the combat capability of the infantry vehicle.

However, the side armor of the car is equipped with an observation mirror instead of a periscope on the top deck. Although the reduction of the firing hole can be regarded as the protection function of the car body, the observation mirror arranged on the side armor also reduces the strength of the armor, so we have to consider this as a failure.

Why do I not use similar and mature periscope on the 86 infantry fighting vehicle and use the design of the observation mirror on the armor plate, which makes the author think hard.


It is not known yet what kind of power unit the car uses. But the photo shows that the front right deck of the car has three similar radiators or intake and exhaust devices arranged on the top deck. It shows that the vehicle is equipped with a powerful engine, and the cooling way of the engine is most likely to be water cooling rather than air cooling methods commonly used in armored vehicles in China.

To sum up, the new two generation crawler infantry fighting car has many advantages, such as tall, car body alignment, floating box, wave board, water jet propeller and so on. The car emphasizes the amphibious performance very much, its water mobile performance should exceed BMP3 or AAAV7, and Watakai Toriku's combat capability is strong. This may be a reason why our country did not choose to imitate BMP3 chassis at the beginning.


The fire system of the vehicle has always been the focus of debate with the good people.

It is obvious that the car has adopted a new BMP3 turret and its fire control system. According to foreign media reports, China could have signed a military cooperation plan with Russia in the early 1997, and introduced the Russian BMP3 infantry combat vehicle fire control system and the matching 9M117 Bastion (North code AT12) laser guided missile.

According to the practice of development and development of weaponry in China, it is foreseeable that the weapon system of BMP3 infantry combat vehicle will gradually become localized in China and will eventually fully master its technology. This will greatly shorten the modernization process of our infantry combat vehicle system and provide beneficial technical experience for our country to develop new infantry combat vehicles.


Referring to the firepower configuration of BMP3, the new step car turret is equipped with 100 mm caliber 2A70 gun and 30 mm 2A72 automatic cannon.

Among them, 2A70 artillery can launch Standard 100 mm caliber ammunition and 9M117 range anti tank missile with a range of 4 km.

30mm2A72 secondary artillery up and down two way shells, using traditional cartridge for ammunition, volume 500 rounds (258 rounds of grenade, 242 rounds armor piercing), on the right side of the main gun with the main gun installed side by side, the main gun left side also installed a 7.62mmt coaxial machine gun, firepower configuration is strong.

Taking this kind of firepower configuration, combined with the better amphibious capability of the vehicle, the fire performance of the bicycle should be fully exerting in the environment of sea crossing and landing, and it can cope with all kinds of soft and hard targets, including tanks, armored vehicles, permanent work and effective forces, and so on, so as to facilitate landing troops to fight.

Therefore, it is not difficult to understand that the vehicle adopts such a firepower configuration. Of course, sacrifices are the complexity of the firepower system and the danger of ammunition explosion.


The fire control system adopted by the car is not the early BMP3 type reported by foreign media, but a new fire control system integrated with the laser range finder in the gun sight. No matter the type and performance of the fire control system, moving the laser range finder from the top of the gun to the sight can enhance the combat capability of the vehicle greatly.

The laser rangefinder is not only easy to damage above the main gun, but also must pitch along with the main gun to point to the target, which is restricted by the pitch angle of the main gun, which not only reduces the field of view of the range finder, but also pitfalls with the main gun.

The early BMP3 turret shape is low round, which is not conducive to the installation of additional armour and reactive armor. However, the new armored combat vehicle used in our new armored combat vehicle is equipped with tilted additional armour plates and integrated with the turret. Its shape is very conducive to the cladding of reactive armor or composite armor, so it has better protective performance.


According to the above analysis, our new crawler infantry fighting vehicle has strong and diverse firepower and attaches great importance to amphibious combat capability.

I can not make a presumed guess about its specific performance parameters. It can only make a general guess that its comprehensive combat level should exceed Russia's BMP3 infantry chariot, and amphibious performance is equivalent to or slightly surpassed that of 63A type amphibian tanks.

It should be said that the design of our new crawler infantry fighting vehicle is very pertinent, and it is competent for the future operational environment and operational tasks that may be faced. The disadvantage of this vehicle is that it emphasizes too much on amphibious combat performance, the importance of protecting the car body is not enough, and its viability is low before the increasing number of anti armored firepower in the future battlefield. The emphasis of future research should be placed on the development and application of dual reactive armor and active defense system, so as to improve the comprehensive operational level of the vehicle.
